Settled in 1642, Lexington is immortalized as the town where “the shot heard ‘round the world” took place on Battle Green, the first skirmish of the American Revolutionary War. The town remains rich in historical buildings and tourist sites. While the town is primarily residential, a number of industries and commercial establishments employ more than 16,000 people. The major shopping area is in Lexington Center, a well-maintained, walk-able community with boutiques, professional offices, banks, restaurants and cafes. Lexington schools are renowned as among the top in the state.
